Budget system/advice for newlyweds with ADHD

My husband and I just got married a few months ago. We had a wedding and then moved overseas to his new military assignment in Europe. We both have major ADHD, which has been impacting our ability to manage our finances. He has a fixed income from the military, and I am looking for a job. Any recommendations would be greatly appreciated!

This might be a post better suited for an ADHD sub.

I turned budgeting into a game using Habitica. I found a budgeting app that I log into daily to categorize my transactions and reward myself at the end of each week. It’s all about the reward vs. effort system.

YNAB (You Need A Budget) is highly recommended for people with ADHD. It’s flexible and allows you to move money around if you overspend in a category. We use three bank accounts: one joint account for bills and two personal accounts for fun spending money. Setting aside ‘fun’ money helps prevent overspending on hobbies. Make sure to budget together, perhaps weekly, to hold each other accountable.

YNAB is the gold standard for budgeting.

I have ADHD and I use the app Cashew to track transactions and set my budget. I also track my weekly personal spending with a physical book. I find small budgeting periods easier to manage than monthly budgets.

You can manually input transactions in YNAB. You don’t have to keep track elsewhere. If you prefer a hands-on approach, YNAB has features for that too.

YNAB is simple, flexible, and has great resources for support. The free trial is excellent, and if you don’t subscribe, you aren’t charged. It feels game-like, which can make it fun to use.
