Best money tracking app recommendations

Hello, I’m on the hunt for a good money tracking app to help me manage my finances more effectively. I need something intuitive with features like budgeting, expense categorization, and maybe even investment tracking. Any suggestions for apps that fit these criteria and have worked well for you?

Here are some top money tracking apps you can choose based on what features suit you best:

  1. Mint: Great for budgeting and expense tracking.
  2. YNAB (You Need A Budget): Focuses on budgeting and goal tracking.
  3. Personal Capital: Offers budgeting and investment management.
  4. PocketGuard: Simplifies budgeting with spending limits.
  5. Goodbudget: Uses the envelope system for budgeting.

I tried it, but it’s not my taste. It isn’t a budgetary planner.

Many offer budgeting, expense sorting, and some even track investments. People swear by YNAB for budgeting, Mint for easy tracking, and PocketGuard for a quick view of your finances. Look into those and see which one fits your style.

I never found any of the apps to do exactly what I wanted in the way I wanted it, so I use a Google sheet. Yes I write down every single thing I spend money on, have for ~3 years now, but it works for me. I set up a new sheet each year, a new tab for each month, and the first tab keeps the running totals of everything for the year.

Plus nothing humbles and keeps my spending on track like having to write down every purchase I made. Stopped at Dunkin’ and spent $4.89 on a coffee? Gotta account for it on the sheet, and watch it subtract from my food - eating out bucket, etc.

In my quest to better manage my finances, I’ve been exploring various money tracking apps that offer intuitive features like budgeting, expense categorization, and investment tracking. After trying several options, I’ve found YNAB (You Need A Budget) to be highly effective. It excels in helping set and track budgets, categorize expenses with ease, and provides insightful reports on spending habits. Its proactive approach to budgeting and user-friendly interface have significantly improved my financial awareness and planning. For investment tracking alongside budgeting, Personal Capital is also worth considering, offering comprehensive tools to monitor investments alongside day-to-day finances. These apps have streamlined my financial management, making it easier to achieve my financial goals.

It is not free, but YNAB is the greatest budgeting/tracking tool in my opinion. I link my accounts, which is probably not the most secure option, therefore I do not encourage it, but I am comfortable with it. I enjoy how I can budget, track expenditures, and monitor my net worth all in one app. My partner and I both have the apps on our phones, so we know how much money we have in each budget category at any given moment. I buy the annual membership and will continue to do so for as long as YNAB exists. If you’re searching for a premium app, this is a 10/10 recommendation.
