Hey everyone, I’ve been thinking about how we rarely chat about income and negotiating salaries. I always negotiate every job offer I get, and I wanted to hear your stories too. I never accept the first offer right away. Instead, I thank them and say I need time to review everything, including salary and benefits. Then I take a day or so to think it over. I find that sleeping on it helps me approach the situation more clearly and without emotions. Typically, I aim for about 20% above the initial offer and hope we can meet somewhere in the middle. What about you? How do you handle negotiations? Let’s share our experiences, both the wins and the losses, to help those who might be hesitant to negotiate.
I work in the public sector, and honestly, the advertised salaries are usually non-negotiable. I had a couple of colleagues turn down offers for my current position because they wouldn’t budge. It can be tough in this sector. At least I have decent benefits, though.
I’m also in public service in Australia, and yeah, it’s mostly non-negotiable. But I recently had an annual review where I told my boss I needed a clear career path or I’d consider moving on. Now we have a plan for me to step into a manager role soon, which I didn’t expect.
I didn’t negotiate my last job, but I told my intern to go for it. I wish I had. Next time I’m definitely going to negotiate and not just accept the first offer.
Right? I never take the first offer either. I usually aim for 10-20% more, and even if they don’t meet it, we often land somewhere in the middle. Better to ask than leave money on the table.
I work in a highly recruited industry, and I always listen to offers, even if I’m happy where I am. It’s good to know what’s out there, and sometimes you can leverage that info for a better deal.
