I looked at the App Store for budgeting apps recently, but the best ones recommended were all subscription apps and quite expensive, like Copilot and Every Dollar. I’m searching for a secure, easy-to-use budget planner or recorder that’s either free or doesn’t cost $100 a year.
After thoroughly researching the available options from reputable sources like Capterra, TIME, Reddit, CNBC, and Fortune, I’ve determined that the best free budgeting software is Google Sheets. While there are several excellent paid budgeting apps like YNAB and Monarch, Google Sheets provides a highly customizable and versatile solution at no cost. It allows me to create personalized budgets, track expenses, and generate detailed reports, all while seamlessly integrating with my other Google services. The ability to collaborate with family members or a financial advisor further enhances the value of using Google Sheets for my budgeting needs. Additionally, the platform’s widespread use and abundance of online tutorials make it an accessible and user-friendly choice, even for those new to budgeting software.
I keep track of and plan my budget using a spreadsheet.

Search for “Microsoft Money Sunset Deluxe.” There are no subscription components; you can download and use it without cost (not from the Microsoft shop). Nevertheless, neither support nor updates are offered. There is no downloading from your financial institutions—all data is entered manually. It’s really simple to use, allows you to run reports, and allows you to search for entries, categories, and custom time periods if you enter all of your transactions once a day or twice. I’ve had MS Money for 5 years!
