What is a zero-based budget app?
Zero-based budgeting is a method where all expenses are justified at the outset of the budgeting process.
A zero-based budget app is a software tool designed to help individuals manage their finances using the zero-based budgeting method. This method involves allocating every penny of one’s monthly income toward expenses, savings, and debt payments, ensuring that income minus expenses equals zero by the end of the month. Zero-based budget apps provide a structured framework for tracking income and expenses, categorizing spending, and setting financial goals.
Here is the zero-based budget app I use.

I’m neither the developer nor related; they’re situated in New Zealand and quite responsive. In just a few days, they put many of my suggestions into action. I’ve received approximately 5 upgrades in the last month alone, all with fantastic new features. I wanted something with a decent user interface and a lifetime license.
Just sharing since I’m delighted I found this app. I’ve tried a bunch of them and found that re-allocating/covering overspending was difficult on the majority of them (save for YNAB, which I was seeking after its recent price increase). If you’re in the same situation, just give it a try.
The transition back to manual input was undesirable for me at first, but now I never have to deal with broken links or 2FA difficulties, and I have more control.
I remember reading about this idea where you set a small amount of money that you don’t really care about spending, like maybe anything under $100. I can’t recall the exact term, but it’s based on your overall wealth. Maybe trying this approach could help with your guilt feelings?
Personally, I handle this by feeling happy when I find a good deal on things I wanted anyway. If something isn’t discounted, I wouldn’t feel as good about buying it (even though I know that’s not really logical). But most of the time, I end up spending less than what I planned.
A zero-based budget app is a tool that helps you manage your finances by assigning every dollar of your income to a specific expense, savings goal, or investment.
The idea is that your income minus your expenses should equal zero, ensuring that you’re actively deciding where all your money goes each month.
These apps make it easier to track your spending, stay on top of bills, and work towards financial goals. Popular options include YNAB (You Need a Budget) and EveryDollar.
They can be really helpful in keeping your finances organized and under control.
