Trying to Do Better with My Budget... Any Advice?

Last month was a big spending month for me. I went on vacation over Thanksgiving week, bought a $700 keyboard (which I really love), and spent over $500 on clothing (which is super rare for me but I’m trying to build my winter closet).

I usually don’t spend this much. I have a budgeting spreadsheet but I struggle to stick to my budget. I’m a college student with limited work hours and my hours are getting cut in January. Luckily, I have decent savings and no debt. My rent is cheap at $500 a month and I split grocery costs with my partner, so I only contribute $250 a month. My bills are about $100 a month.

Since I have savings, I tend to not worry when I go over budget. I’m trying to do a no buy month for December and making all my Christmas gifts with supplies I already have. I want to commit to a low buy year next year but feel like I need more time to prepare.

Any tips for a low buy year or sticking to a budget? I really need some help right now, so thanks in advance!

Sounds like you had a fun month but I get how hard it is to stick to a budget. Maybe try simplifying your budget process? It could help you stick with it better.

I totally relate to your situation. If you overspend but it doesn’t ruin you, just see it as a lesson. Each month is a chance to learn.

What do you mean by simplifying your budget? I’m kind of new to this.

Good question! Simplifying means maybe just tracking fewer categories or setting a fixed amount for certain expenses. Makes it easier to manage.

Yeah, budgeting takes work for sure. It’s all about finding what works for you. Good luck with your no buy month!
