I’m really interested in getting a dog, but I want to make sure I’m a responsible pet owner before jumping in. I’ve never had a dog since moving out of my parents’ house about a decade ago. Looking back, my parents were not great pet owners, and I definitely don’t want to repeat that.
Do you guys have any recommendations for books, videos, or just general advice before I start looking into adopting a dog? I’m not in a rush because I really want to be sure I can be a good pet owner. I’m even open to waiting and not getting a dog at all if I think I’m unfit.
I have some pros: I have a stable job with consistent hours, plus friends and family nearby if I need a sitter. I also have plenty of space, since I live in an apartment with a backyard.
But there are some cons too: I’ve never owned a pet, I don’t have a roommate or partner, so it would just be me and the dog. I’m in my late 20s, so I might have major life changes coming up, like moving. IDK if that would stress a dog out.
I think it’s great that you’re thinking this through. A stable job and support nearby are big pluses. Maybe check out some dog training books like ‘The Art of Raising a Puppy.’

That book is solid! It really helps with understanding puppy behavior. But what do you mean by ‘training’? Like, how do you even start with that?

Also, think about the breed. Some are more adaptable to changes like moving, while others might have a tougher time. Researching breeds could help.
Good point. Are there specific breeds you think are better for someone in my situation?
@Freddie
For apartments, smaller breeds like Beagles or French Bulldogs can be great. They usually adapt well, but it really depends on the individual dog’s personality.

It’s awesome that you’re taking this so seriously. Just remember that patience is key, especially with training and adjustments. Good luck!
Thanks! I appreciate all the input. I’m really looking forward to it, but I want to do it right.
