Hey guys, so I’m trying to save for a car, furniture, and a new wardrobe, but it feels like I’m barely getting by! My bi-weekly paycheck is between $850-$930, but I have a ton of expenses that eat into it. Rent is $899.99, electricity is about $303.5, internet costs $51.78, laundry is $140, and groceries (plus pet supplies) come to about $300. I’ve been walking everywhere (averaging 16,000 steps/day!), but my shoes are wearing out fast, and I’ll need a new pair soon, which is going to cost me at least $60. I’ve already bought 30 gallons of rice and beans to save on food, but I can’t really cut costs on hygiene (allergic to some non-name brand soaps). I don’t eat out, and I’ve tried cutting back where I can, but it’s still tough. I work 40 hours a week, but my job won’t give me more hours, and I’m getting a 20¢ raise in March. I need to save around $23,000 for everything, so I’m open to any advice or ideas!
Wow, you’ve got a lot on your plate! It seems like you’re doing everything you can to save, but $300 for electricity? That sounds high. I live in a colder state, and I’m only paying around $150. Maybe it’s worth investigating why it’s so much or try switching to energy-efficient appliances? Also, I’d skip the CDs for now—they’re good for long-term savings but might not help if you need quick access to cash.
@Flynn
Yeah, I try to pay extra during the hotter months to cover the higher bills, but I’m not sure if there’s much else I can do… I’ll look into it though. Thanks for the tip about the CDs! I’ll definitely consider the money market mutual funds.
I totally feel you on the shoes issue, lol. Walking that much is tough on your shoes. Maybe check out discount shoe stores or look for sales? I’ve also had some luck finding decent shoes at thrift stores. Every little bit helps, right?
@Paxton
Good idea! I might try looking at thrift stores. I didn’t even think of that, haha. Thanks for the suggestion!
You’re doing great considering your situation! Have you thought about reducing your laundry costs? Maybe using the local laundromat less often and trying a more space-efficient drying method at home could help cut back? Even a little can add up.
@Val
Yeah, I tried washing in the tub, but it takes forever to dry! Maybe I need to get creative with the drying process. I’ll look into cheaper alternatives for laundry services, too.
I hear you on saving for that $23,000 goal, that’s a big number! I’m curious—are you using any apps to track your spending? I started using Habit Money, and it helped me spot little areas I was overspending on. Could help you focus your savings goals!
@Jody
I haven’t heard of Habit Money, but I’ll definitely check it out! It sounds like it could really help me stay on top of things. Thanks for the recommendation!
It’s awesome that you’re taking charge of your budget. That’s a great step! Have you considered cutting back on things like your internet or even exploring local resources for cheap/free furniture? I found some great deals at thrift stores, and it helped me stretch my budget.
@Abi
I’ve thought about canceling my internet, but I use it for work sometimes. Thrift stores for furniture are a great idea, though. I’ll start looking there for sure!
