How do you decide if you can afford to move? I really would like to move to a bigger apartment, in a 1 bed 1 bath 600 sqft apartment right now, which was great when I was in college and broke— but some more space (and living somewhere with out stairs) would be great. I’m having a hard time justifying the cost increase to myself though. I pay $825 a month for my apartment right now, and the house I’m looking to move into is $1,195 a month. I can’t decide if the space increase is worth it or if I need to just suck it up.
If you are moving into a house you will have more expense. You will want to fill the space, maybe stuff outside as well. Only you can figure out if it is worth the $$$
I didn’t even think about filling the extra space! Thanks for the advice
If $1000 after bills works for you, go for it. But $3100 income alone is tight. Save if possible.
Are you planing on buying a house? I recommend not spending more than 25% of your take home pay on rent, and if you’re trying to save for a down payment it might be worth putting the extra money on savings. You’re already spending more than you probably should based on take home pay of $3100.
@DAVE No house plans for 5+ years, grad school soon. Fiancé splitting rent, but can afford solo if needed.
where do I get an apartment that size for 825
@JOSH In the southeast! It’s kind of a steal even for the area though, if I’m being honest
Create a budget with new rent. Adjust spending or saving, and decide if it’s worth the change.
Thank you! I wrote it all out and it seems like I could afford it (I also read about the one third of income or less rule and it fits that), I do wonder how to factor for what the other commenter said above, needing/wanting to fill the extra space
