The title may sound like I’m trolling but I’m completely serious. I’m 36 and have always been terrible with money. I have about 1000 euro in savings total. I’m lucky that I own an apartment through sheer luck, not savvy. I own my own car. But when it comes to actually being wise with money I’ve tried to be disciplined over the years and I’m recognizing that the pattern is I just break at some point in my consistency. Have any of you ever seen a mental health professional to try to combat your budgeting and financial well-being? If so did it work? Thank you.
Mental health and finance have a direct correlation. There are mental health counselors that specialize in finance.
I didn’t go for budgeting but for bipolar that causes you to make stupid financial decisions. The meds and talking have changed my life. I’m debt-free other than the house and one car. Car will be paid for in 8-10 months. Money in the bank. Things are good.
Ask about Dialectical Behavioral Therapy. It works very good if you are a reckless spender or have other habits you want to change.
I think it will help. I used to spend all that I made, I realized that it was my lack of self-esteem. Got on the right track and started using zero-based budgeting. I still spend money, but now I prioritize saving and investing first after tithing.
Best of luck!
Therapy has helped me with how I manage my finances 100%.
That’s not a bad idea, but also get a financial advisor. I’m not the best with money either and what helps me is to make saving automatic. Eg, setting up automatic transfers for the day I get paid to several savings accounts. Having the money not available to me because it’s been ‘taken from me’ helps a lot.
Don’t discount yourself too too much. You own an apartment and a car and you recognize your shortcomings with budgeting. You got this op!
