Best budget car under 12k?

I’m getting close to buying my first car, and I’ve got a budget of 12k. Ideally, I’m looking for something that has some power behind it, so it doesn’t feel too slow on the highway, and I’d prefer a gas-powered car for easier support. It should be comfortable, of course, and ideally something newer. The main thing I care about is reliability. What car should I go for? Also, what websites should I check to find good deals?

For the past couple of decades, I’ve been getting cars from a local mechanic who buys cars from people who would rather replace their car than repair it. He fixes everything up and sells them. I’ve never had any issues, and the most I’ve paid is 4k. If you’re on a budget, maybe you can find a mechanic like that in your area.

@Vail
That’s awesome.

Thanks!

Honda Civic or Toyota Camry are great choices for reliability and affordability.

The problem is that Camrys with 50-80k miles are often priced between $20k and $25k these days.

@Ari
Buying a Camry with 80k miles for 25 grand is wild.

Yeah, especially here in Florida, where fees can push the price even higher. I looked at a couple of 2018 Camrys, and the price went from $15k to $20k after all the fees and taxes.

Civic is more in line with the pricing of a Corolla these days.

Honda Civic all the way.

For reliability, go with Honda or Toyota. I wouldn’t go newer than 2019, but that depends on what ‘new’ means to you. You can look up reviews on any car you’re considering—just search the year, make, and model. You’ll find tons of info about MPG, common issues, and how it compares to other cars. Also, don’t forget to get an insurance quote for any car you’re seriously thinking about!

I’m a big fan of the Lincoln MKZ for both performance and comfort. Whatever cars you’re interested in, I’d suggest joining some online groups where people discuss them. You’ll get the inside scoop on the pros and cons of each model.

Check out a 2013 Honda Civic.

The Honda CR-V is a solid choice.

If you want a bit more power, an older Lexus might be a good option. I had a 2007 GS350 that I got for 16k with 75k miles, and it was a great ride—300hp V6, AWD, and super reliable. Another good option would be the Infiniti G37 AWD.

I bought my son a 2011 Audi A8 for around 12k with 90k miles. It’s got a V8 and is super comfy with features like massaging seats. He gets about 31-33 mpg on the highway too. People blow the maintenance costs out of proportion. But if that’s not your style, you could always get a Toyota Camry.

@Dane
Smart people know that guys driving cars like that tend to be more about showing off than anything else. It’s probably not the best idea if you’re looking for a reliable partner or something long-term.

@Lennon
You must be a Camry owner.

@Dane
So you’re more worried about impressing people than making sure your kid has a safe, reliable car? That’s an interesting priority.
